6.2.14 - 6.8.14 Happy Monday! This past week was pretty low for me in terms of mood and production, but now that it's over I'm feeling way better !! I'm hoping for some good things this week, both for the game and just overall. :D Milestone 03 in ART399 was due this week, so a lot of my time was put into just completing the deliverables for the milestone, versus doing more concept work. On the plus side, a first pass of the game's Style Guide has been completed, which can be seen here ! Now to talk a little about what I've done this week. Characters: Players — Rough Turnarounds and Action Poses First off, you'll see that two of our characters' names have changed: Leon is now Troy, and Kari is now Lara. Although I posted the players' rough turnarounds earlier in Week 02, these turnarounds are better presented and also include Milo's adjustments. The background was made by Kiem in collaboration with Trent. As for the "Character From Game Camera Angle" and "Character Scale in Game," those were requirements for the milestone, which I'm hoping won't be needed/on the final sheets. We'll see, though ! Along with the turnarounds are action pose sheets for each player, based off of the moves that they'll have in game:
Props: (Dream) Study — Finalized MINI SPOILER WARNING: There will kind of be some spoilers in this section. If you'd like to read it, highlight the blank spaces to seee it.Last week I posted about the comps of the above props (and the ones a bit down below), along with some of my process in making them. This week I got to bring them all into color, so I'll talk a little bit about that process. Since the (Dream) Study was created after Nyx escaped from the Book of Dreams (thus creating the never-ending night that the children must stop), we pictured the Study that the children were in being warped somewhat into Nyx's likeness. For that reason, we decided to use her color scheme, or slight variations of it, for these props' color palettes. The "actual" colors of these props will be decided later, since these "Dream" versions will be seen much longer than the other ones. Although we decided that background props and assets would be desaturated, I kept the colors for the Book of Dreams saturated, as it's an important prop the game. Everything else was pushed back though, and I also ran into some trouble with the bookshelf ladder blending in with the bookshelf, something that may still need some working on. I like how these came out, even if they're (most likely) just a first pass. I'd like to do an "effects" pass on them eventually — at least adding some glow to the Book of Dreams and the wall lamp. :) The other props I finalized were the players' sleeping bags ! Bringing them into color was interesting, and here's what we ended up with: The sleeping bag comps from last week that were picked were #2 for Troy, #3 for Milo, #1 for Lara, and #3 for Eris. One of the biggest things I focused on when picking the colors for these props was making sure that the respective players didn't blend in with their sleeping bags, especially since they'd all be sleeping in them at some point. It was tricky at first because I automatically thought, "I'll just color coordinate the sleeping bags to their pajamas," but even after adjusting the saturation and brightness, the players were still going to get lost or there would just be too much of that single color. Eventually I just started throwing colors on and adjusting them in accordance to their respective player, whether it was the hue, saturation or value. Using reference for things like baseball fields and old sheet music helped this process along as well, especially when I was having issues coming up with the inner pattern for Troy's sleeping bag. Overall, the bags' colors ended up different enough from the players' pajamas except for the inside of Lara's bag. The hue/saturation of this pink is different than her pajamas though, so it should be fine. But if not, I'll go back to the drawing board ! These props are a bit desaturated and darker as well since they'll be background props, and nothing super important to the story. Mock Up: Final Look and Feel Since a finalized "Look and Feel" was also needed for this milestone, I took the one that Kiem and I have been working on and did some more work on it — changing the bear enemy to the frog enemy, adding some feather "particle effects," and doing a pass on the UI. The previous bear enemy hadn't been developed and didn't look enough like an enemy, so I switched it out with the frog enemy from the previous game, Oneironauts. He (along with the other previous enemies) will need some more development/redesigning, which I'm looking forward to ! The particle effects for this game will need some concepting eventually as well, especially once we start developing the unique pillows that the players will be using. As for the UI, this pass was a sort of rework of the UI inOneironauts and will definitely need some work. I was looking at the UI of Skullgirls for reference, but I'll be working on making a bigger UI reference library once I start doing more passes on it. Next up contains some spoilers, so thank you for reading so far ! :) **Twoneironauts Spoilers Ahead**Environment: Nyx's Lair — Thumbnails We've moved on from working on our characters in ART401 (so I'm done developing Nyx for the class, but not overall), and have started working on environments. Since I worked on Nyx's character concept, we decided that I would then work on her lair — which will pretty much be the last level of the game where you fight her.
Before doing these thumbs I did some research on where Nyx mythologically resides, along with asking Trent what his thoughts for her lair were. These were the things we came up with and I used as reference/starting points:
With all of these references points, I picked five main themes that I wanted to explore in these thumbnails, those being:
Anyway, that's about it for this week ! Comments, questions and feedback are always welcome. :D Professor Feedback for our Milestone 03 Presentation can be found here.
