5.26.14 - 6.1.14 Hello! This week was a bit rocky as well, as I wasn't feeling very good in the middle of the week, but things are getting done ! I have a lot of things on my plate work-wise, not just with Twoneironauts, and the past week or two I honestly haven't been able to keep up with it all, so I've been feeling bad about it... During the week, it seems my schedule is class/meetings/interning/out from around 9am - 9pm, then going home and working (lately just on Twoneirounauts) from 10pm - 3am. This time frame shifts around depending on the day, as I intern Tuesday - Thursday, but that's generally what happens. Although I really like having a schedule and being productive, it's a bit depressing that my weekdays are full of just working. I try to make my weekends work-filled as well, because those days are usually "uninterrupted," so I can just sit in one place and work on things. Now, I'll be honest and say that I don't work and concentrate 100% of the time, and some nights I spend time with my boyfriend or friends, so maybe it's just on me to manage my time better ! During the past two weeks, I've also realized that I need to prioritize my time when working on things (or just in general !), which I'll address later in this post. Anyway, I'm hoping that the upcoming week is better, both with my time management and work. We have a lot to do !! Characters: Players — Final Designs? I know last week I said we'd be sticking with the posted character designs, but there were a few more tweaks that needed to be done ! Which were:
Props: (Dream) Study — Comps This week I comped 10 props (6 of which are shown above) for the (Dream) Study — the "home" of our world, where the players will save the game, customize their characters, go to different levels, etc. Trent made an awesome Prop List (which can be found on the Documents page), which listed the props needed, along with descriptions of them and references ! It was super helpful in creating these guys. When working on these props, I concentrated on using different shapes/proportions for each variation. For example, the Oneironomicon is a book, so I of course gave it the standard book shape at first. But what if the book was wider? Or tall and thin? Remembering previous advice from my professors about going wild and trying things that you may not think will work was helpful here, although I do think that these still came out a bit tame, haha. This next part will seem odd since I just said how great exploration was, but I do think that most of these comps weren't needed, and that I spent too long doing them. Although you may like or want to give everything 100%, not everything NEEDS it. For example, say you're painting a portrait. You'd want to spend the most time on the face, since that's the most important part of the piece, while something like the hair could be done with simple brushstrokes. You wouldn't want to paint every single strand of hair because:
Moving on, after I did those comps, I picked what I thought worked best together and in general, then met with Trent to get some feedback. These are the props we ended up with: The changes done were making the Book Stand a bit wider, to match the Oneironomicon, along with fixing the book a little itself. I'm thinking of possibly making the bookshelves stackable so we could have tall shelves, or shelves of any size, but that's something for later. These props should also help Kiem when she concepts the (Dream Study), which should be good ! They'll be more helpful when they're colored, of course, aha. Then the other four props that I comped were the Player's sleeping bags ! These will also be in the (Dream) Study and will be used for choosing what character to play. For example, if somebody wants to play on their own, the other three characters will be sleeping in their sleeping bags — similar to how the players were treated in Animal Crossing: Wild World. The sleeping bags were themed to the characters to aid in showcasing their personalities; Leon being athletic, Kari being kiddish and cheery, etc. Since Milo is still a bit up in the air, I comped three different themes for his sleeping bag, vs. sticking with one theme like everyone else. A team survey has been sent out to see which sleeping bags everyone feels matches the characters the most, so after these comps have been decided on, I'll be bringing all of these props into finalization/color ! Next up contains some spoilers, continuing off of last week's work ! **Twoneironauts Spoilers Ahead**Character: Nyx — First Pass Next up is some more work on Nyx, which is what I'll call her "first pass." I took value comp #1 (which can be seen in last week's post) and applied color, trying to keep the value pattern. Since she's the mother of Hypnos (the end boss in Oneironauts), the first thing I tried was using his color palette — the reds, blacks and golds. This came out decent, but wasn't exactly how I pictured Nyx to be. Moving away from the reds, I then treated her as her own character, using blues and purples instead, which were reminiscent of the night that she represents. #2 and #3's color palettes are somewhat similar as they both use purples, blues and yellows, while #4 was more exploratory/experimental. I think #4's colors are a bit too out there and borderline complicated, but at least it was given a try ! Although this character represents the night and has been portrayed as only seen in the shadows, with the bright, saturated colors of our game, following that description wouldn't have worked out very well. In the end, none of these felt really "Yes, that's Nyx !", but I thought that #2 felt the closest. So I took that color comp and ended up with this first pass: Seeing this gave us a better idea of where we wanted to go with Nyx, in terms of tweaking her design and colors. An issue that I later found out about was that her purple veil shows up pink on other monitors, which was a reason why Trent wasn't too fond of this color scheme. We worked it out after meeting with each other, but I'm still not sure how to fix this yet besides making it even more purple, which is an option. Nyx will need some more work, so I'm sure she'll be in my posts for a while longer !
That's about it for this week, though. Comments and questions are always welcome ! If you have feedback, feel free to leave that as well ! :) Professor Feedback for the art in this post, along with some previous work, can be found here.
