6.9.14 - 6.15.14 Hello again and happy Monday ! As for this week's work, not a whole lot was done since we're still figuring out what we currently need to do/what needs to be done, which we'll hopefully figure out soon ! This week was just iteration all around, so nothing too new, really. Here we go ! Characters: Players — More Design and Silhouette Work Something that's been pointed out to us many times (and something I've finally gotten time to work on) is our characters' silhouettes — specifically how they're all too similar to each other, especially Troy and Milo. So this week I did some comps exploring our players more; trying to differentiate them and push their personalities in their looks. Milo's hair was the first thing I tackled, since Troy seemed to be pretty determined in his hair design. I tried to play with shapes and certain hairstyles, such as #4 (the pompadour), inspired by Janelle Monae. I liked #2, #3, and #6 best but ultimately went with #6, since it had the most interesting silhouette. With Milo's "new" hair, I went on to play around with each of the character's designs/silhouettes, and ended up with these: As you can see, they all have some sort of head gear/accessory now ! After last week's crit, I spoke to Connor who had a lot of suggestions for the characters, one of the suggestions being Troy wearing a baseball helmet. With that and previous crit where another student mentioned they should all have something in common (besides the pajamas), I decided they would all wear something on their heads. So to sum it up, this change hopefully and ultimately would:
I felt like Troy and Lara's accessories were pretty spot on, but I wasn't sure about Milo's (since he's still a sort of mystery to us) and Eris' (whose silhouette isn't affected by the clip at all). Thankfully I got some feedback at the team work session, although I found out I lost my way a bit with the players' characters/personalities... Like I stated earlier, I went with #6 in Milo's hair comps, due to the silhouette. But the hairstyle, along with the headphones, made him look more "rocker" than "shy guy," especially with the shaved head. After speaking with Trent and David, I took #2, #4, and #5 from the previous comps and did some more variations of those styles. The first row of hairstyles I felt fit, but I thought they made his silhouette boring — making his head just an oval. The second row of hairstyles was more interesting, but they didn't feel very shy either, and were too styled for a child's hair as well (something I'll touch upon again shortly). In the end, I went with #3b in the third row of styles, because although it's a bit generic, it could add to his shy personality in that he could cover his face with his hair if he's embarrassed, etc. With #3b in mind, I tackled the player's designs/silhouettes again, applying some of the feedback I'd gotten at the work session: Here's a general idea of the crit/feedback Trent had on the players (besides Milo, since that was addressed above) and what I did in response:
Next up is some spoilery art, but thank you for reading thus far. :D **Twoneironauts Spoilers Ahead**Environment: Nyx's Lair — Refined Thumbnails This week we had to take 10 thumbnails from last week's crop and tackle them in a different way. My first thumbs were quick traditional sketches with value placed over them in PS, so this week I took those and "painted" over them using the lasso tool — really trying to define the shapes and details of each thumb. The thumbs I picked to refine were my "favorites" and the ones that I thought were either the best or most interesting. I also tried to line them up in a way that they could read as progressing through a level, whether we decide to go that way with these or not. I'll only be finishing one thumb for this class, though.
Using the lasso tool to make these was interesting since I rarely use it when making concepts. It was difficult to control at first, but once I started utilizing it to make shapes versus actual objects, the process went much smoother. It was also easier building the details instead of drawing them, which made these end up super stylized. I'm not sure which one I'll be finishing up for the class, but as for Nyx's lair for the arena boss battle, #9 looks pretty promising. We'll see, though ! That's about it for this week ! Thanks for reading, and as always, comments, questions and feedback are welcome. :) More Professor Feedback for our Milestone 03 Presentation can be found here.
