7.7.14 - 7.13.14 Liz here, with my weekly art update ! Mostly character and prop work in this post. This week was also Milestone 05 in ART399, where we presented our Final Style Guide and prototype, which you can access on the following pages: I'm happy that I ended up taking this course, as it really pushed us into starting this project and producing things for it. I learned a lot from all of the feedback and am looking forward to continuing to work on this game !! Anywho, let's go on to the art. :D Characters: Troy Iterations and Finalizations Above are some variations on Troy's design, as we focused on nailing him down for this milestone, while the rest of the Players will follow after. I spoke a lot about playing around with the colors but ended up working with details instead (as seen on the left), adding sleeve cuffs and foot padding, along with a band-aid for some more visual interest in the face ! There were some small color/value adjustments as well, but nothing too big. After showing the team the "updated" version of Troy, they liked the band-aid but not where it was located, as it could be mistaken for a nose. Seen on the right, I then did a few variations of band-aid placement, where we ended up going with #4. With Troy's "finalized" design, I went on to do his model sheets: a turnaround (with some game-specific aspects), action poses, and expressions. The expressions are new this time around, and I based them off of ones that could be seen in the Player UI portrait: (from left to right, top to bottom) winning, sleeping, getting hit, hurt, and very injured. The expressions were fun to do, although the action poses will need another pass as they need to be pushed more !! I'm happy with how Troy's design turned out, so now I'll be moving on to finalizing the rest of the Players as we move forward. Props: Color Adjustments and Modeling Since our art style/rules and, namely, color palette has been changed, the existing props needed adjusting as well ! A lot of it was desaturation and contrast, but there was some hue shifting done as well, especially in the Sunken Forest props. The Home/Study props are less contrasted now, in both color variation and value. I took out a lot of the red, especially in the books, and the saturated yellow has been replaced with a paler, desaturated one. While adjusting them, I worked on matching them to the color script thumb of the Study. The sleeping bags were adjusted in desaturation and contrast, so not much was done with them. The Sunken Forest props now have a greener hue (calling back to the hue shifting mentioned above), as I worked on having them fit in with the current environment concept that Kiem has been working on. Contrast was also adjusted in these concepts, and I had to be careful that they didn't blend in with the background but didn't exactly stick out. They fit in well with the environment, at the moment. Overall, I think that the color adjustment worked out, but I feel a bit wary about just desaturating colors, even though that's what our art style is now. It's just that palettes still need to be well put together; that even though a palette works well saturated, it may not work as well desaturated. That may also just be a preference, though. Style-wise, I think that these props will need another pass, as the shapes don't really match what we're going for now; there's a lot of curves and round shapes that can be played around with. For Milestone 05 we also needed to model five props, so I created the ones above. Since we're a 2D game, I "modeled" these by building them in Flash and doing a texture overlay in PhotoShop. After making them, it got me thinking about how we would actually make these assets; if they're not going to be animated, why even build them in Flash in the first place? So moving forward, I feel that animated assets will be built in Flash, while all the other assets will be made in Photoshop. This is something to talk about with the team though, of course. :)
That's about it for this week ! Thank you for reading, and as always, comments, feedback, and questions are welcome ! Professor Feedback for Milestone 05 can be found here.
