6.16.14 - 6.22.14 Hey, Liz here ! I apologize for the super late post, but earlier this week I decided to migrate our production website from Google Sites to Weebly, so I was busy with that. Everything should be on here now, but the site will always be a sort of WIP. I also did a breakdown of Guacamelee and the current Twoneironauts' environments to see what they were doing vs. what we're doing, and what we could learn from it -- which was super interesting ! Anyway, last week's work was mostly iteration on the players, along with some new props ! Here we go. Characters: Players -- More Design Iterations As I said in last week's post, I was worried about the silhouettes getting a bit too complicated. So I did another pass on these and simplified Milo and Lara's hair, while still keeping the new design. Now Milo's headphones can be clearly seen, and there's not as much noise going on in Lara's silhouette, especially around her head. Some of Milestone 3's Feedback addressed how the shapes inside the characters were hard to read, especially their eyes, along with how being able to read the eyes helps in communicating a character's personality. So this week I did some eye/face comps ! I did an iteration on the current eyes, adding an extra "dimension of depth" by adding a pupil and highlight, and then experimented with big, round eyes -- a la Powerpuff Girls, and a more anime style. I think the added pupil and the highlight in #1 helped their faces pop more, while #2 feels really cartoony, and #3 makes them look more cute. After our team meeting this week, we'll be going with #1, the biggest reason being that the Players having huge eyes really emphasizes how big their heads are, and they're already really big already (about the size of their bodies). With the eyes being that big, it also throws off the size variation in the designs; Milo's eyes are about as big as his headphone ear pieces, for example. I also like keeping the sort of angular shapes we have going on now, which we'll probably push more moving forward. The last thing I did with the Players this week was experiment with outlines, which was also suggested in feedback. The trouble with these was that:
With such small characters, having outlines on details like the zippers and the nightgown bands makes them pop out a bit too much, and could even look like they're just plain black lines from far enough away. This matters especially with the face details, as the outlined eyes' colors are lost, and the eyebrows and mouths look too heavy. Another issues that came up was using lines within the hair; Milo's became too detailed and Eris' bangs ended up looking like cutout. A lot of these issues have to do with color, so when more line iterations are done, these are the things I'll be focusing on:
Shantae: Half-Genie Hero will be the biggest reference for adding outlines to the characters, since we all really like how they did it. Props: Sunken Forest Some more props !! With the Sunken Forest Prop List (which can be seen on the Prop Lists page) that Trent put together, I made these guys. The overall goal was to mix the "underwater" and "forest" themes, resulting in things like underwater mushrooms or flowering coral. I also tried to keep these to the color palette of the current Sunken Forest, so these aren't totally final.
Working on these props was kind of exciting because of what's planned for them, whether it be just decoration or something interactive ! Anyway, that's about it for this week. Thanks for reading ! Comments, feedback and questions are always welcome. :D Professor Feedback for this post will be up soon.
